Message from David R. Carr Grand Exalted Ruler
Special days in June to honor flag and father
On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress in Philadelphia adopted the following resolution: "Resolved, That the Flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternating red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation."
Prior to this date, various banners of different designs were used in a number of colonies. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is the first and only fraternal organization to require formal observance of Flag Day. In July 1908, the Grand Lodge, assembled in Dallas, Texas, provided for the annual nationwide observance of Flag Day on June 14 each year, by making it mandatory upon each Local Lodge of the Order. June 14 was officially established as Flag Day by a proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson, issued May 30, 1916.
The Elks Flag Day Service is very special as it not only covers the history of our flag, but many of the flags of the earlier colonies are displayed for the audience. It is important to plan and advertise your Flag Day ceremony well in advance in order for the general public and media to make plans to attend. You may want to include a military salute by a local veterans group, a flag folding exercise by local scouts or military group, a choir or vocalist, a community leader as a guest speaker, a school student or students to provide taps, etc. With proper planning, you will be able to conduct an impressive service and demonstrate to everyone present our commitment to honoring our flag and all it stands for.

I encourage every Lodge to call those Members who are elderly, disabled or otherwise unable to attend these activities on their own, and offer them a ride to and from your event. They will appreciate your demonstrating that
Key to membership gain
Only the Exalted Ruler holds the gavel during Lodge meetings. The Exalted Ruler determines how much time is spent in Lodge meetings on promoting membership gains. The Lodge membership goal is very simple, a Plue One from the starting membership number on April 1 of the new Lodge year.
Only through leadership from all Lodge Officers will the Lodge have a membership gain. One person cannot do everything in the Lodge, but can get the ball rolling to create momentum. One person can create excitement about a membership gain. Are you that one person?
The Exalted Ruler can create some excitement by starting a contest between Lodge Members and by challenging another Lodge in his or her district. The Exalted Ruler can motivate Lodge Members to boost Lodge membership. Bragging rights are an awesome thing.
This is leadership
The Secretary and remaining Officers also play an important part in the leadership of the Lodge. There is at least one person in each Lodge who is a driving force or influence in many of the Lodge projects. They must help the Exalted Ruler create excitement in the drive for a membership gain.
Grand Lodge offers incentives for recruiting and reinstating Members. You can earn an Elks watch for signing up 11 new Members and an Elks clock for 33 new Members. Be the Top Recruiter in your Grand Lodge Area and earn a trip to Grand Lodge.
One does not have to be an Officer to be motivated and become a leader. Get excited about what the Elks do in your community. Leadership is the key to a Plus One. Demonstrate to your community that “Elks Give From the Heart.”
Membership application now available online
On May 15, the new online Membership application was activated. Members of the Order will be able to send membership invitations to friends and family via the elks.org website. Invitees can complete the application, then "click through" to submit their membership application online.
Lodge Secretaries will be notified of these applications via the "Alert" screen of CLMS2, and can import the data directly into their database with the simple click of a button.
